Outdoor Recreation Needs Assessment

Talk to us about Parks and Outdoor Recreation in Clarington

As Clarington continues to grow, the Municipality needs to create a plan to ensure that our outdoor recreation areas meet the needs of our active community. To that end, the Municipality has launched a review of these outdoor areas including parks, baseball diamonds, soccer fields and splash pads. We are working on a study called the Outdoor Recreation Needs Assessment (ORNA) that will serve as a guide over the next 15 years so the Municipality can support our growing community with the appropriate outdoor amenities.

We need your feedback to help identify gaps. Tell us what’s missing so we can improve our outdoor spaces for future generations.

Study scope

We want your feedback on:

  • Sports fields (soccer, baseball, slo-pitch, softball, football, lacrosse, rugby, cricket)
  • Tennis and pickleball courts
  • Outdoor basketball courts
  • Skateboard and BMX bike facilities
  • Bocce courts
  • Lawn bowling greens
  • Leash-free dog parks
  • Water play areas
  • Recreational trails

Tell us how you currently use our parks and outdoor areas. How would like to use them? What do we need more of? How can the space be improved?

What is not part of this study:

  • Indoor recreation facilities
  • Playground equipment
  • Outdoor pools
  • Outdoor ice rinks
  • Golf courses
  • Ski hills
  • Harbours/beaches
  • Cemeteries
  • Open space/natural areas

Current outdoor recreation areas

The Municipality owns approximately 87 parks totalling 163 hectares of developed parkland. Within these parks, there are 54 soccer fields and 32 ball fields, 14 tennis courts, 23 basketball courts, 4 skateboard parks, one artificial turf soccer/football field, 3 leash-free dog parks, and several other activity-specific facilities. The Municipality also has over 15 kilometres of recreational trails located in creek valleys and along the waterfront.

As part of the study, we will assess these outdoor recreation spaces and identify areas for improvement.
